Administrative Core



The Administrative Core supports all the administrative operations that are involved in making sure that ICEMR Malawi research projects are carried out effectively.

The Administrative Core for ICEMR Malawi is based in the Department of Osteopathic Medicine Specialties of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University, with a satellite office in the University of Malawi - College of Medicine’s MAC Communicable Diseases Action Centre (MACCDAC).

Dr. Terrie Taylor (Core Leader)

Dr. Terrie Taylor, who is also one of the Principal Investigator’s for the ICEMR Malawi, leads the Administrative Core.

With a base at Michigan State University, she divides her time between Malawi (Jan-June) and Michigan (July-Dec), to make sure the Administrative Core’s activities and other operations are coordinated effectively.

Michigan State University

MSU administrative operations focus on financial reporting, implementation of administrative and financial policies, management of grants, management of grant finances, management of international travel, expedition of shipments of equipment and materials to Malawi, and providing assistance to Cores with planning training events in the US

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences – College of Medicine

COM’s administrative operations focus on preparation of progress reports, preparation of financial expense reports, facilitation of local procurements, coordination ICEMR with College of Medicine administration, management of logistical operations for projects, and organization and coordination of meetings and trainings.

Core Activities

  • We recruit projects staff and coordinate human resource activities in accordance with institutional requirements of Michigan State University and the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences – College of Medicine
  • We establish and enforce administrative policies and procedures to effectively support the Center’s research mission and monitor progress towards its goals and objectives.
  • We facilitate communication within the Center and with outside stakeholders by coordinating meetings, teleconferences, conferences which include the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), but also coordinate monthly ICEMR Malawi steering committee meetings and regular Core and Project team meetings.
  • We arrange local and international travel for Center staff and visitors in compliance with Government of Malawi immigration policies, NIH travel policies,  and the regulations of Michigan State University and University of Malawi College of Medicine
  • We maintain all relevant and required documentation for the Malawi ICEMR, including IRB approvals, medical registrations, evidence of training in human subjects research, travel records, quotations, quotations, invoices, and receipts
  • We prepare the Center’s budgets and control budget expenditure
  • We prepare project progress reports regularly and annually
  • We facilitate procurement of projects in compliance with Michigan State University and University of Malawi College of Medicine procurement policies
  • We organize trainings for Center’s staff as part of capacity building
  • We engage with equipment suppliers and service providers to ensure quality of service
