MALARIA ALERT CENTRE (MAC)

The Malaria Alert Centre (MAC) is a research unit under the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences that works with Ministry of health, local and international health agencies to address priority health problems in Malawi and the SADC region through operational and evidence synthesis research, capacity building and training, health care systems strengthening, disease surveillance, and monitoring and impact evaluation in communicable diseases including malaria, HIV, vaccine preventable diseases and Neglected tropical diseases.

MAC is inviting applications from suitably qualified and enthusiastic individuals to fill various positions as detailed below on our Malaria Vector Competence project that seeks to better understand the persistence of malaria in Malawi by conducting community-based studies and collecting data in Health Centres.

1. LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (BLANTYRE) - 1 POSITION

Position summary
We are looking for a self-motivated person who is highly skilled in microscopy and is interested in broadening their knowledge in malaria transmission. The Laboratory Technician is expected to assist in community and laboratory based research activities in and around health centres in Blantyre district, as well as at MAC.

Duration of Contract: The initial contract will be for 6 months with possibility of further extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Duties and responsibilities:
• Reading blood smears for the detection of malaria parasites, including gametocytes.
 • Dissecting Anopheles mosquitoes and detecting malaria parasites (oocysts)
• Assisting with setting up laboratory assays
• Assisting with sample organization, storage, and tracking
• Perform data entry in hard copy and electronic format
• Regular report writing
• Assist with any other related duties as seen fit by the principal investigator and team leader. Qualifications and experience
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory or any related field.
• Experience with working in community will be an added advantage
• Willingness to learn, be mentored, and improve
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Internet and e-mail applications
• Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and meet strict deadlines
• Must be prepared to have a flexible schedule when required
• Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
• Ability to follow written instructions on experimental Standard Operating Procedures
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
• Experience in collecting data using tablets

 2. ENUMERATOR (BLANTYRE) - 1 POSITION

Position summary
The Enumerator will conduct community and health centre based research activities in and around health centres in Blantyre district.

Duration of Contract:
The initial contract will be for 6 months with possibility of further extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Duties and responsibilities
• Conducting informed consent with potential study participants
• Assist with planning of study activities, including recruitment and participant visits
• Conducting interviews and using tablets for electronic data capture
• Maintaining coherent records of daily activities and provide updates to team members
• Assisting with sample organization, storage, and tracking
• Regular report writing
• Assisting with team organization and planning
• Coordinating and working closely with local health centre staff and community leaders on study activities
• Any other related duties as seen fit by the principal investigator and team leader Qualifications and experience
• Minimum of diploma in community development or social science
• More than three years’ experience in field surveys
• Prior experience with tablet-based data collection and long duration fieldwork
• Experience in community engagement and working in a busy research setting • Ability to work in a team and cultivate team spirit
• Demonstrable track record of hardworking spirit, integrity and discipline

3. RESEARCH NURSE (BLANTYRE) - 1 POSITION

Position summary
The Research Nurse will conduct community and health centre based research activities in and around health centres in Blantyre district.

Duration of Contract:
The initial contract will be for 6 months with possibility of further extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Duties and responsibilities
• Planning of study activities, including recruitment and participant visits
• Assessing participant enrollment criteria and conducting informed consent
• Working with enumerators to collect data from participants and record using tablets
• Collection of biological samples
• Documenting and maintaining accurate records of study participant visits, procedures and care
• Assisting with sample organization, storage, and tracking
• Ensuring that study procedures and protocols are followed
• Regular report writing • Participating in team work to conduct all aspects of the study
• Coordinating and working closely with local health centre staff and community leaders on study activities
• Any other related duties as seen fit by the principal investigator and team leader Qualifications and experience
• Minimum of a diploma in nursing from a recognized institution. Those with a Certificate in nursing and having over 6 years of research experience will also be eligible.
• Registered with the Nurses Council of Malawi.
• Field experience in community engagement
• Experience in a busy research setting
• Computer literate with experience in utilizing electronic data capture, Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet application systems.

4. TRAINING MANAGER


MAC is inviting applications from suitably qualified and enthusiastic individual to fill the position of Training Manager to support trainings that will be done in conjunction with the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP). The aims of the trainings are: to provide supportive supervision to primary health care workers trained in malaria case management in the context of COVID19; and to orient support staff who conduct MRDT testing in infection prevention in the context of COVID 19.

Type of contract and duration

The contract will be for one (1) year and renewable subject to availability of funds and performance.

Duties and responsibilities

These will include, but are not limited to the following:
• Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of the training activities according to coordinated work plan.
• Liaise with District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) to plan and capture training requirements.
• Define and track training tasks and milestones to ensure systematic planning of the prioritized objectives.
• Support the Ministry of Health officials in the development of training materials.
• Develop teaching aids, such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, and reference works
• Allocate and monitor training tasks as well as support tasks.
• Assist and prepare facilitators for the training.
• Ensure that all trainees have the necessary training materials and logistics necessary for training.
• Support the testing of trainees through exit interviews and surveys to evaluate effectiveness of training.
• Monitor and write training progress reports.
• Actively manage all financial resources to ensure value for money. Required qualifications, skills and experience
• Applicants must have an appropriate post graduate qualification, preferably a Master’s degree such as an MPH or other relevant qualification
• Experience working with stakeholders within the Ministry of Health, DHMTs, NGOs, international implementing partners and the donor community.
• Experience in writing training reports.
• A self-starter who works with little support.
• Well-developed communication and writing skills.
• Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.

REMUNERATION

The positions will attract a salary with benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications as applicable to contract staff in the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. KUHES is an equal opportunity employer.
